Altar Servers
All youth of the parish who are at least 9 years old are welome to have an active role in the Eucharistic Celebration as an altar server. Three servers are required at each weekend mass. The cross bearer, one who leads the procession into the assembly for worship; the book bearer, one who holds the Sacramentary or book of prayers; the acolyte, one who assists the priest in the preparation of the gifts of bread and wine. At special celebrations, a fourth server may be required to carry the incense and/or holy water. Families are also encouraged to serve together. Additionally, one or both parents are invited to serve at the altar with their child/ren.

Cantor Ministry
Meets: No formal meeting times; if rehearsal is needed, it is
done privately with the Organist/Director of Music. Usually, the cantor material is quite easily learned and rendered, even by a person who does not "read" music, especially if it is learned at home with the aid of a cassette tape prepared in advance by the Organist/Director of Music.

The role of the cantor in the celebration of the Eucharist is to encourage, lead and support the assembly in its rightful role as active participants in the hymns, sung responses and acclamations of the Mass. with certain exceptions (such as the chanting of the verse portions of the Responsorial Psalm, or the Gospel verse), the role of the cantor in Catholic liturgy is NOT that of a soloist.
Since the cantor's ministerial function is one which, ideally, enables and encourages the assembly to engage more fully in its proper role as co-celebrants of the Mass, it. is only necessary for a prospective cantor to possess a "reliable, solid" voice rather than a "trained" or "beautiful" voice.
At St. Cecilia's, we do not require that a cantor be able to formally read musical notation; simply having a decent voice that can match pitch (that is, "carry a tune"), keep a tempo moving along sufficiently, and not be reluctant to lead the assembly from the cantor stand are the only abilities and qualities that would be requested of a cantor.
We are always looking for new cantors here at st. Cecilia's. Anyone who wishes to inquire about this ministry should contact David Lasky or one of the priests of the parish.

Catholic Men's Group
